    • includes acute mountain sickness, high-altitude cerebral edema and high-altitude pulmonary edema. It is caused by lower oxygen levels in the air and thus the blood. Travel to high altitude may also exacerbate certain pre-existing medical conditions. While 2500 meters is considered the usual threshold altitude, some persons are more sensitive to lower oxygen levels and may become ill at altitudes of 1500 to 2100 meters
