  • a double-stranded DNA virus that is universal in human populations. Usually transmitted sexually, with antiviral antibodies first appearing in adolescence or early adult life. Following acute infection, the virus persists predominantly in spinal sensory ganglia and is subject to periodic reactivation, often without cutaneous or mucosal signs of infection. Accounts for up to 10 to 20 percent of isolates in adults with viral meningitis and is roughly twice as common among women
