NDM-1

New Delhi metallo-ß-lactamase-1(English)

  • a bacterial enzyme that renders all current ß-lactam antibiotics inactive. Correctly identifying patients is critical so that appropriate therapy can be provided and the spread of this resistance mechanism can be prevented. By end 2009, isolates of E. coli and Klebsiella species carrying this enzyme had been identified in at least 29 patients, becoming the largest contributor to carbapenem resistance in the UK, and 17 of them had travelled to the Indian subcontinent, while 14 had received medical care while there. All 26 isolates from the area of Haryana had an indistinguishable genetic fingerprint, which suggests the dissemination of a single epidemic strain
