There are multiple definitions:

  1. National Fire Protection Association(English)

  2. nonfunctioning pituitary macroadenoma(English)

    • a tumor of the endocrine system that is virtually always benign and can be difficult to detect. Make up approximately one third of pituitary adenomas. At diagnosis most of the tumors are macroadenomas (greater than 1 cm in diameter), and the patients present with symptoms caused by pituitary hormonal insufficiencies and/or the tumor expansion, i.e. headache, decreased vision and features of hypopituitarism (includes fatigue, dizziness, dry skin, irregular periods in women and sexual dysfunction in men. Prevalence estimated at 22/100 000 in cross-sectional studies, mostly at >50 years of age, and the progression can vary widely. The gold standard method of management is surgical resection of the tumor via endoscopy using a transsphenoidal approach through the nasal cavity. Prognosis for treated patients is generally good. Patients often need lifelong diagnostic imaging and endocrinological monitoring. Differential diagnoses for visual field defects include compressive lesions (eg, craniopharyngiomas), ischemic lesions (eg, pituitary apoplexy), inflammatory lesions (eg, multiple sclerosis), and toxic lesions (eg, pheniprazine)
