unsaturated iron-binding capacity(English)

  • defined as the excess amount of iron needed to fully saturate transferrin. Measured as follows: a predetermined amount of Fe3 + is incubated with serum at near neutral pH. This should enable Fe3 + to saturate all the available free sites on serum transferrin. A chromogenic agent is then added to complex with the free unbound iron. Changes secondary to this complex helps to calculate unbound iron. As the total added amount is known, UIBC can be measured
