  • approved by the Food and Drug Administration in December 2001, and its use is endorsed by U.S. and European society guidelines. Patients for whom the WCD is indicated include those with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death but who are currently not eligible for an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD), such as having a left ventricular ejection fraction < 35% and being within 40 days from a MI, having revascularization within the past 90 days, having newly diagnosed nonischemic cardiomyopathy, and others. The WCD has been prescribed for over a million patients since its approval. Outcomes have been reported, and despite successful shock therapy of unstable VT or VF, not all survive
