- a complex phenomenon in which arterial blood gas homeostasis is challenged by either diffusion limitation, shunting of pulmonary arterial blood, mismatching of ventilation to pulmonary perfusion and/or hypoventilation, as largely characterized in healthy adults or elite athletes.
