glial fibrillary acidic protein(English)
- a brain-specific protein, released into the bloodstream after brain tissue damage. Within 2–6 h after symptom onset, a significant difference in serum GFAP levels has been observed between hemorrhagic and ischemic acute strokes. Thus, it is a biomarker for differentiating between patients with ischemic stroke and hemorrhagic stroke. An intermediate filament-III protein uniquely found in astrocytes in the CNS, non-myelinating Schwann cells in the PNS and enteric glial cells
