The “Gastrointestinal Symptom Questionnaire” is composed of 16 questions for upper GIS symptoms (epigastric pain, heartburn, regurgitation, gastric bloating, sensation of hunger, nausea, vomiting, early satiety, post-prandial fullness, belching, dysphagia, and halitosis) and 18 questions for lower GIS symptoms (abdominal rumbling, abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, and abnormal defecation). The demographic characteristics (age, gender, place of birth), lifestyle characteristics [smoking status (cigarette or cigar smokers regardless of the amount), alcohol consumption (females =14 units/week, males =21 units/week), excessive coffee consumption (=6 units/day)], and medications [aspirin, NSAID, proton pump inhibitor), and histamine 2 receptor antagonist] were recorded
