Many challenges are associated with these techniques before the analytical output can be confidently interpreted to provide quantified metabolite information. Particularly, MS coupled with RPC has proven specifically useful for the profiling of body fluids with minimal preparative stages. However, polar and polar ionic metabolites such as amino acids and sugars are not retained on reverse phase columns. After investigations into other chromatographic methods, including HILIC, C18, amino, and phenyl-hexyl columns, it is evident that the current selection of chromatographic techniques does not represent a complete solution for metabonomics
