There are multiple definitions:

  1. insufficient sleep syndrome(English)

    • defined by hypersomnolence symptoms due to chronic sleep debt resulting from self-induced sleep restriction or wake extension. It is a distinct disorder with clearly defined diagnostic criteria under “central hypersomnolence disorders”. Diagnostic criteria include daily periods of an irrepressible need to sleep or daytime lapses into sleep for three months, with a duration of sleep shorter than expected for age, being present for at least three months. Additionally, it is required that symptoms are not better explained by another untreated sleep disorder, the effects of medications or drugs, or any medical, neurologic, or mental disorder. It is chronic and related to environmental and behavioral factors. Genetic factors could also be involved; aka “chronic insufficient sleep,” “voluntary sleep curtailment,” “sleep reduction,” “sleep restriction,” “inadequate sleep,” or “sleep deprivation”
