  2. mucociliary clearance(English)

    • in the lung epithelium is a critical and physiologically regulated protective function of the airways and lung that is essential for the clearance of respiratory pathogens. The airways are covered by a layer of fluid and mucus that is constantly being propelled by cilia from the distal to proximal lung airways. The number of ciliated cells is higher in the upper airways (there are an estimated 109 cilia/cm2 in the ciliated cells of the nasal and tracheal/bronchial epithelium), while nonciliated cells and basal cells are more frequently found in the distal lung. Highly glycosylated mucins, lipids, and secreted proteins bind to inhaled respiratory irritants and pathogens. In addition to mucus secretion by the epithelium, the proximal airways also contain submucosal glands that secrete fluid and mucus. If mucociliary clearance is impaired, the excess mucus forms plaques and plugs that allow invasive bacteria to adhere and colonize the airways
