micro-CT

microcomputed tomography(English)

  • a CT scanning technique forfeiting FoV for the highest possible resolution. Objects can be scanned with a voxel resolution of 1 µm. The system is equipped with similar components to those present in a CT scanner but at a smaller size; e.g., the X-ray tube typically has a window of 1–50 µm; the field of view is around 1–100 mm. Different from CT scanning, a long acquisition time (from 10 to 300 minutes) is necessary. Used in bioarcheological contexts. Some examples include the study of taphonomical changes in bog body bones and the investigation of fossil teeth to evaluate antemortem treatment of dental pathology; also denoted as μCT
