  4. potentially inappropriate medication(English)

    • inappropriate drug prescribing can be defined as the use of medications whose risks outweigh their benefits. One common approach to examining this issue is development of explicit “drugs-to-avoid” (Beers) criteria which include medications that should be avoided in any circumstance, doses that should not be exceeded, and drugs to avoid in patients with specific disorders. Overuse (polypharmacy) and underuse are also issues in medication appropriateness and likely account for a larger amount of avoidable morbidity in the elderly than prescription of these proscribed medications
