PRV

pseudorabies virus(English)

  • first described as “mad itch” in cattle and characterized by heavy itching. In 1902 Aujeszky provided the first scientific documentation about the etiological agent. Inoculating the recovered virus into pigs and rabbits resulted in transmission of the disease which is distinguishable from rabies. Infects a broad range of vertebrates, including cattle, sheep, dogs, cats, goats, chickens, raccoons, possums, skunks, rodents, rabbits, guinea pigs, and, rarely, horses. Infection of carnivores, such as bears and wild felines, after consumption of raw PRV-infected meat; aka Aujeszky's disease
